Originally presented at the first CRI conference in 1990 and subsequently published in 1992 as the conference proceedings Designing information for people.  I am reissuing this paper as a stand alone document because many visitors to our website come asking us “what is information design”

Since 1990, I have refine this definition many times, as you will find if you enter the terms information design in our search button, but this was where we started, and in many ways it still captures the essential nature of our craft.
