Performance-based Information Design

Become a uniquely qualified professional information designer with world-leading expert guidance from the pioneers of performance-based design.

You will:before and after data

  • work collaboratively with organisations and skilled people to create information that people will find easy to use.

Whether you design websites, documents, wayfinding systems or entire publishing systems, this course will give you the opportunity to learn how to manage a design project, and how to design, write, test and implement the design to performance-based standards.

Course structure

  • The course comprises a sequence of 7 modules.
  • You complete each module in the sequence before proceeding to the next.
  • You proceed through the sequence of modules at your own pace.

Module sequence

  • Introduction: history and principles
  • scoping Ensuring that all factors necessary for the design or redesigns are known and taken into account, as far as possible. Setting performance requirements.
    benchmarking Using diagnostic testing to find out how existing information is performing against the agreed performance requirements set in the scoping stage.
    prototyping Using the best of writing and graphic design skills to develop a design solutions in accordance with the performance and other requirements.
    testing Using diagnostic testing to find out how new information is performing against the performance requirements set in the scoping stage.
    refining Using the best of writing and graphic design skills to refine the information so as to removing any faults that prevent it from performing in accordance with the performance requirements.
    implementing Using the best production skills to implement a complete design solution in accordance with the performance requirements.
    monitoring Routine measurement of the performance of the information in use.

    We estimate that there are about 48 hours of student work in each module.

    Once completed, you will be awarded a Diploma in Information Design.

    Enrolment and payment

    • To help us advise you on your suitability to undertake the course, please contact Dr Ruth Shrensky, our Director of Studies.
    • If you are accepted, we will direct you to complete the enrolment form and pay an enrolment fee of US$200.00.
    • You can then opt to pay for each part of the course as you commence it (US$2,000.00 for each module) or pay the total fees of US$12,600.00 in advance (a discount of 10%).
    • CRI members receive 20% discount on all fees.
